Mills River sits about 18 miles south of Asheville by I 26 and NC 280, a farming town at the northern door of the Pisgah National Forest.

Camping in and around Mills River

The forest campground inside the town is the only verified pitch here, and it runs on a split seasonal schedule worth understanding before you book.

Only the first of these has a Mills River address. The rest are labelled with the ground each really sits on.

North Mills River Recreation Area: The Pisgah National Forest campground inside Mills River, offering standard, electric and full hookup pitches. Full service runs from 20 March to 15 November. From 16 November to 20 March it drops to limited service, with no running water, no electricity and pit toilets only.

Lake Powhatan Recreation Area: In the Pisgah National Forest west of Asheville, about half an hour north. Standard pitches at 37 dollars, electric at 46 and full hookups at 52. Booking runs through Recreation gov and the gatehouse keeps longer hours from March to November.

Rutledge Lake RV Resort: Fletcher, roughly fifteen minutes east on NC 280. Full hookups on 20, 30 and 50 amp service, big rig friendly, and open to families. The rig needs to be under ten years old.

Mount Pisgah Campground: On the Blue Ridge Parkway at milepost 408.7, up above the town. There are no electric, water or sewer hookups at any pitch, and it opens seasonally from May to October, so treat it as a dry stop rather than a base.

Best things to see and do in Mills River

Mills River is farmland that happens to sit where two large drink makers chose to build, and where the Pisgah National Forest begins. A day here tends to mean forest roads and trailheads in the morning and a long table at a brewery or cidery in the afternoon, which is a fair description of the whole area's appeal in miniature.

Sierra Nevada Taproom - brewery, restaurant and an amphitheatre
Bold Rock Cidery - the cidery and kitchen on School House Road
North Mills River - forest campground, picnic ground and trailheads
Mills River Park - the town park on Town Center Drive, hours unposted
Pisgah National Forest - the forest the whole town backs onto

Matching an RV to a Mills River trip

Forest roads set the limit here rather than the highway. A Class C motorhome handles the run up NC 280 and the forest campground turnings without difficulty. A Class B motorhome goes furthest up the narrower gravel roads if trailheads are the point of the trip. A Class A motorhome is better parked for the week at a full hookup resort nearby than taken into the forest. The large bunkhouse travel trailer suits a family staying put, brought in behind a suitable truck. Delivery is available if you would rather it arrived already sited. Availability depends on the individual RV and your travel dates, and pricing varies by RV class, season and rental length. View available RVs or Contact the Asheville Camper Rentals team.
