Where to camp near Black Mountain

No campground could be confirmed as operating inside Black Mountain itself, so every option below is named with the community it really sits in.

The nearest verified pitches lie either side of the town. None of them is in Black Mountain.

Asheville East KOA Holiday: Swannanoa, at 2708 Highway 70 East, the closest option, just west along I 40. Full hookups on 50 amp service and takes rigs up to 70 feet. Its own site notes that the lakes remain closed for repairs after Helene, so the camping is open but the water is not.

Curtis Creek Campground: In the Pisgah National Forest near Old Fort, east over the ridge. It reopened for the 2026 season from the end of March, but there are no hookups of any kind, no restrooms and no drinking water, so come fully self contained.

Asheville Bear Creek RV Park: Asheville, at 81 South Bear Creek Road, about half an hour west. Full hookups on 30 and 50 amp service with pull throughs at 25 by 60 feet, no age restriction and year round opening.

Lake Powhatan Recreation Area: In the Pisgah National Forest west of Asheville. Standard pitches at 37 dollars, electric at 46 and full hookups at 52. Booking runs through Recreation gov.

Best things to see and do in Black Mountain

Black Mountain took some of the heaviest damage in the region and has spent two years putting itself back together. Shops have returned to the main street and the town park is busy again, though the recovery is not finished and you will still see it. Two of the five below are open with limits, which is stated rather than glossed over.

Lake Tomahawk Park - the town lake loop, playground and concerts
Swannanoa Valley Museum - valley history on West State Street
Black Mountain Center for the Arts - galleries and a busy programme
Historic downtown - independent shops, steadily coming back to life
Montreat - the wooded conference village a mile or so up the road

Choosing an RV for a Black Mountain trip

The I 40 approach is easy, but the lanes above the town are not, so size the unit to where you actually plan to drive. A Class C motorhome is the sensible middle for a family. A Class B motorhome goes furthest up toward Montreat and parks on the main street without trouble. A Class A motorhome is better left at a full hookup pitch while you drive in. The large bunkhouse travel trailer earns its keep on a longer family stay at the KOA. Delivery across Western North Carolina is available with setup handled for you. Availability depends on the individual RV and your travel dates, and pricing varies by RV class, season and rental length. View available RVs or Contact the Asheville Camper Rentals team.
